Wallace Wade won three national championships at Alabama before leaving the Crimson Tide for Duke, where he transformed the Blue Devils into a national football power.
His 1938 “Iron Dukes” went the entire regular season without allowing a point. But Wade’s remarkable story went far beyond football: during World War II, he returned to military service in his 50s before eventually coming back to coach Duke again.
Today, Duke football still plays at Wallace Wade Stadium.
