🏀 One of college basketball’s great cathedrals may have started with two football coaches and the back of a matchbook.
Long before the Cameron Crazies and Coach K, Eddie Cameron was pulling double duty at Duke — coaching basketball while serving on Wallace Wade’s football staff.
Then, in 1935, according to Duke lore, Cameron and Wade sketched the idea for a new basketball arena on the back of a matchbook.
Five years later, Duke Indoor Stadium opened.
But Cameron’s football story wasn’t finished.
When Wade returned to military service during World War II, Cameron stepped away from basketball and became Duke’s head football coach.
Decades later, the two buildings sitting side-by-side would bear their names:

The matchbook may be lost to history.
But the sketch is still standing.
